Surat Ganesh Mahotsav: At a time when ganesh festival is being celebrated across the state, there have been reports of four-five anti-social elements pelting stones on the idol of Shriji installed at Syedpura Variyali Market in Surat. A police complaint was also lodged after the idol of Ganesha was vandalised in the stone-pelting.
As the matter escalated, people gheraoed the Syedpura police station. The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the mob when people arrived to lodge a complaint.
On the other hand, MLA Kanti Balar also reached the police station after coming to know about the incident and tried to convince the locals. Mp Mukesh Dalal also reached the spot and assured the people that those who pelted stones would not be spared.
City police commissioner and mayor also rushed to the spot after the incident was reported. Police convoys have been deployed as the matter intensifies. Two policemen, including DCP Vijay Singh Gurjar, were injured in the stone-pelting incident. Vehicles were also vandalised. A lathicharge has also been resorted to by the police to disperse the assembled crowd. So far, 35 people have been detained in connection with the incident, while the police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
Minister of State for Home Orders Inquiry
Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi has ordered an inquiry into the incident of stone pelting at Ganpati pandal in Sayyedpura area of Surat. He said that the scissors will not be spared. My eyes are on this incident, such incidents will not be tolerated. Separate teams of police have been formed and investigation has been ordered to take immediate action against those responsible for the incident.
