A second attempt on Donald Trump’s life has ignited a debate on the efficiency of the protection accorded to the former US president. The FBI has said that it is probing “what appears to be an attempted assassination” on the Republican presidential candidate. The US Secret Service said it opened fire on a gunman at the former president’s golf resort in Florida on September 15. The Secret Service agents spotted the barrel of a rifle poking through some bushes and opened fire at the suspect, officials said. The incident took place almost exactly two months after a gunman attempted to assassinate Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania. The latest incident raises new questions about the intelligence agency’s broader ability to protect officials and candidates in its charge. The Secret Service significantly bolstered Trump’s protective detail after coming under intense criticism following an attempt on his life in Butler on July 13.
