Charusat's Dr. Dhara Patel gets big success: Grant of Rs 62 lakh approved for research project to induce bacteria to commit suicide

Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Charusat University and Principal of BDIPS. Dhara N. Patel has received a grant of more than Rs 62 lakh from the Government of Gujarat for an important research project. According to the World Health Organization, by 2050, most drugs will become ineffective. To solve this problem, Dr. Dhara Patel is adopting a new approach. Their project is based on the method of inducing bacteria to commit suicide. The project, approved by the Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission and the Department of Science and Technology, will see dr. Shishir Gang has joined as a co-investigator. The team will carry out the research for three years. Dr. According to Dhara Patel, the main objective of this project is to find out the 'kill switch' present in the bacteria. This switch will be a trigger button that will lead bacteria to self-destruction. This research can be a blessing in disguise especially for dialysis patients. Resistant bacteria accumulating in catheters used in dialysis is a big problem for patients. With this project, bacteria can be controlled without antibiotics. This will reduce the economic and psychological burden of the patients and will also increase the life expectancy of the catheter.
